BESS

Battery energy storage systems (BESS)

Our BESS projects are developed through Dora Sun S.r.l., a company in which Gaya Solar holds a stake and which brings together, alongside our team, partners with specific expertise and a proven track record in utility-scale storage. A team dedicated exclusively to battery systems, covering every phase: site selection, permitting, Terna grid connections and financial structuring. Active pipeline: 1.1 GW in development across 9 projects in Italy.

Utility-scale battery energy storage system

Energy storage at industrial scale

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are the enabling technology for fully integrating renewables into the national grid. With BESS, energy generated at peak hours is stored and released when demand requires it, making the power system more stable, more efficient and more resilient.

A fast-growing market

Without storage, the intermittency of solar and wind is a structural barrier to decarbonisation. Italy's utility-scale BESS market is expanding rapidly, driven by rising solar PV penetration, Terna incentives for dispatching services on the Dispatching Services Market (MSD) and the 2030 targets of the National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC), which call for more than 71 GW of installed solar PV and a growing share of storage.

The Dora Sun team has specific expertise in complex permitting procedures, in managing relationships with Terna for transmission grid connections and in the financial structuring of large-scale storage projects.

Gaya Solar in BESS

1.1GW9 projects

Dora Sun

Gaya Solar's storage development is managed by Dora Sun S.r.l., a group company dedicated exclusively to the storage segment. Its active pipeline reaches 1.1 GW of capacity across 9 projects in Italy, positioning the group among the leading independent BESS developers in the country.

Our BESS capabilities

  • Site selection and grid analysis

Identification of optimal sites based on local grid capacity, land constraints and proximity to congestion zones.

  • Permitting

Management of Single Authorisation (AU) procedures for standalone and co-located (BESS + solar PV) plants.

  • Terna grid connections

Application for and management of STMG grid connection solutions and connection agreements with the national transmission system operator.

  • Financial structuring

Co-development with institutional investors and international storage players.

  • PV + BESS integration

Development of co-located plants combining solar PV generation and storage, maximising project returns and bankability.

Why storage, why now

A rapidly expanding market

The growth of solar PV is creating structural demand for storage to keep the grid in balance.

Terna incentives

The MSD framework remunerates the availability of storage capacity for ancillary services.

Complementarity with solar PV

Co-located PV + BESS plants optimise the generation profile and increase revenues.

PNIEC targets

The National Energy and Climate Plan foresees significant growth in storage capacity by 2030.
